Proficiency in Focus (World Languages)

Target Audience:
World language educators

Abstract:
Proficiency in Focus: See Your Curriculum, Your Classroom, and Your Students in a Whole New Light

Ahead of the RIFLA annual conference, RIDE is excited to announce a half-day no-cost pre-conference professional learning opportunity for RI's world language educators.
How do we help learners grow from beginners to confident, real-world communicators on the journey to biliteracy? In this interactive workshop, world language teachers will put proficiency in focus—reframing how we see our materials, our instruction, and our students. Together, we’ll design tasks for the three modes of communication—interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational—using the curriculum and textbooks you already have. We’ll also explore how AI can support purposeful design, feedback, and differentiation. The big idea: what we put in—our tasks, texts, and expectations—shapes the output students can produce, and ultimately, their progress toward biliteracy.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
Apply a proficiency lens to the three modes of communication.
Leverage existing materials to design tasks that move learners forward.
Use AI tools strategically for differentiation and formative feedback in support of biliteracy goals.
