[RIDE] - guidance on collecting attendance data |
Dr. Ken Gu - SEA |
In keeping student records of attendance/absences, it is very important to separate the 'excused' and 'unexcused' absences.
Excused absences are 2A-2I in https://www.eride.ri.gov/dataElements/CCDItemValues.asp?itemTblName=attend_type
Unexcused absences are 2J-2K.
RIDE uses the submitted absences data to compute and validate the ADM and ADAs. In addition, the State is required to report the number of truants to USDE, see http://www-prod.pen.k12.va.us/VDOE/Publications/student-coll/08-09/truancy_rate_08.pdf for reporting requirements and guidance.
In this guidance, a truant is defined as a student who has accumulated 10 or more unexcused absences in a school year. This threshold distinguishes between students who rarely have an unexcused absence and students who have a persistent or chronic pattern of unexcused absences.
As we stated in earlier communications, collecting and reporting the absences data is required. If reasons are not documented for absences, report them under 2K for unexcused.
