Code Set for RACE

Definition: The general racial category which most clearly reflects the individual's recognition of his or her community or with which the individual most identifies. (Note: These categories reflect the revised Standards for the Classification of Federal Data on Race and Ethnicity (Statistical Policy Directives No. 15) by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). These categories do not reflect the reporting requirements of all Department programs. An alternative would be to list the options as separate data elements and have a yes/no option for each one.]

B	Asian/Pacific Islander	A person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Pacific Islands. This includes, for example, China, Japan, Korea, The Philippine Islands and Samoa.	AS
C	Black (Not Hispanic)	A person having origins in any of the Black Racial Groups. Do not include persons of Hispanic origins.	BL
D	Hispanic	A person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or South American or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race.	HI
E	White (Not Hispanic)	A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, North Africa, The Middle East or the Indian Sub-Continent.	WH
